About

Suicide-by-cop incidents present some of the most complex and scrutinized encounters in modern policing. These events occur when a subject's behavior results in a deadly force response by authorities - whether through reckless actions, criminal intervention, or an intentional effort to provoke lethal force. A subset of SPH, commonly referred to as suicide-by-cop (SBC), involves individuals who deliberately engage in threatening behavior to compel officers to use deadly force as a means of ending their own lives.


This course examines the behavioral, verbal and tactical indicators associated with SBC incidents. Participants will explore pre-force warning signs, response considerations emphasizing distance, time and cover, and structured negotiation strategies designed to reduce risk. Emphasis is placed on intelligence gathering, emotional awareness among responders, and category based intervention approaches - Direct Confrontation, Criminal Intervention, and Disturbed Intervention.
